December Jobs Picture Strong

The State of Indiana has released the December 2015 Unemployment Report.  The rate for Huntington County was reported at 4.1%.

The jobs picture in Huntington continues to show improvement, having started 2015 at 6.7% and ending the year at 4.1%. "All the key metrics are trending in a very encouraging way," said Mark Wickersham, executive director of Huntington County Economic Development Corporation.  The State reports indicate that more people are in the labor force, more people are employed and fewer people are unemployed than a year ago.

Wickersham commented, "Not all that long ago our unemployment rate stood at 14.3% and now it's 4.1%.  At one point, well over 3,000 people had lost their jobs.  Now the State's report indicates only 770 Huntington County workers are unemployed."

The Community continues to work hard to find ways to attract talent to Huntington County.  Workforce development efforts through the Community Learning Center provide training opportunities for industrial skills.  Community development efforts to promote quality of life amenities are under construction as well as downtown, neighborhood, and gateway corridor revitalization projects and additional projects are being planned.

"The Community understands that most of our major employers have openings available and we're working hard to help attract and train talent," Wickersham said.  "Huntington County is a great place to live and work and the current jobs picture is evidence to that claim," he concluded.
