March Unemployment Rate Reported at 5%

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development has released the Unemployment Report for March of 2016.  The rate for Huntington County was reported at 5% while the rate for the State of Indiana was 5.5%.  The report covers the period from February 11 through March 10.

The Huntington County rate is slightly higher than February's 4.9% and is unchanged from one year ago.  The March report reflects an increase in the total labor force of 436 from the previous month and an increase of 741 compared to one year ago. The report also shows an increase of 421 in the number of people working compared to February and over 700 more jobs compared to one year ago.  15 more people have become unemployed during the period of the March report compared to February.

"Our jobs picture continues to be strong," said Mark Wickersham, executive director of the Huntington County Economic Development Corporation.  "Not that long ago our unemployment rate was 14.3% with over 3,000 people out of work," Wickersham added.  "Even though the percentage of unemployed has increased, so have the numbers of people working and being counted in the overall labor force," he concluded.
