Unemployment Rate Stable for July

Huntington, Indiana - The Indiana Department of Workforce Development has released the monthly unemployment report for the month of July.  According to the State, the unemployment rate for Huntington County was at 8.2% for the reporting period. The rate is statistically unchanged from the previous month. The rate for Huntington County is slightly lower than the statewide rate. Huntington County’s rate has improved significantly from the recession high 14.3% experienced in June 2009.

"A combination of factors impact the July figures," said Mark Wickersham, executive director, Huntington County Economic Development. "Recent layoffs at Unilever and Hiner Transport combine with seasonal trends to impact the statistics. We need to remember the July report includes summer workers, such as high school and college students, who are typically not permanently part of the labor force.”

"In addition, it's becoming evident that some employment decisions are being affected by concern about the upcoming presidential election,” said Wickersham. “While most of our clients are moving forward according to their original plans, Midwest site selection consultants are reporting to economic development officials that some client expansion and relocation decisions are being delayed until the outcome of the presidential race is clear."
