Government Releases January Unemployment Report

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development has released the Unemployment Report for January of 2016.  The report covers the period from December 11, 2015 - January 10, 2016.

The State reports the unemployment rate in Huntington County stood at 4.7% for that reporting period.  This compares with 6.7% for the same time in 2015.

Unemployment in Huntington County peaked at 14.3% in June of 2009 and had fallen to 4.1% in December of 2015.

"The data covers the holiday period and really serves only as a benchmark at this point," said Mark Wickersham, executive director of Huntington County Economic Development Corporation.  "Huntington County's rate continues to be significantly stronger than in previous years," he added.  "Our agency will closely monitor the situation, especially in light of the UTEC announcement," Wickersham added.  UTEC announced earlier this year their intention to relocate manufacturing to Monterry, Mexico.  No UTEC layoffs are expected prior 2nd quarter of 2017.
