December Unemployment Rate at 3.4%

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development, in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, has released the December 2017 Unemployment Report.  The data covers the period from November 11, 2017 through December 10, 2017.
The government reports the unemployment rate for Huntington County stood at 3.4%.

The rate is a slight improvement from November's 3.8% and 3.5% from one year ago.  The rate in January of 2017 was 4.6%.  The December data reported 609 Huntington County residents unemployed, down 71 from the previous month, and down from 848 at the beginning of 2017.

"Huntington is 29th in the State, and the County is temporarily the highest in the 11 County Northeast Indiana Region," said Mark Wickersham, executive director of Huntington County Economic Development Corporation.  "We're all aware of the transitional situation at UTEC and the impact it will have on the situation, yet the rate is significantly lower than annual average since 1990 of 5.57%," Wickersham added.

"The good news is nearly every major employer in Huntington County, and in fact, Northeast Indiana, has job openings available at this time.  While there are numerous job posting websites, Indeed.com lists over 2,000 jobs currently available within 25 miles of downtown Huntington," Wickersham said.
